Tin Hearts

Educational game development case study

Educational example — not a CrocoApps project. This page analyzes a third-party product and presents an illustrative plan for a different, original project. No client relationship, development credit or endorsement is claimed.

Tin Hearts provides a useful reference for co-development exercise. The exercise below considers how a team could define an external-team work package that a lead studio could review and integrate safely.

Reference product: verified public facts

A narrative puzzle game involving toy soldiers and a detailed toy-world setting. Steam lists Rogue Sun as developer and Wired Productions as publisher. This exercise does not establish that either used an external co-development team.

Challenge — illustrative brief

An external team can deliver attractive content that still fails to integrate with the main game. Ownership of scripts, asset dependencies and acceptance decisions must be clear before production begins.

Solution — proposed approach

Use a hypothetical bounded environment-and-puzzle work package for a different original title. Agree on one integration scene, coding and asset conventions, performance limits and a review build cadence. Require a representative asset to pass the complete pipeline before multiplying production volume.

Gameplay and systems

For the proposed work package: inspect a scene, redirect moving characters, test the sequence and revise puzzle timing.

Progression and economy remain owned by the hypothetical lead studio. The external team does not introduce multiplayer, backend services or new analytics dependencies. It supplies event hooks and localization keys through the agreed interfaces. Existing editor workflows are preferred over a separate administration tool.

Production scope

A proposed package includes one original environment, one puzzle sequence, art integration, performance cleanup and a handover guide. Main-game architecture, narrative ownership, publishing and LiveOps remain outside the package.

  • Game design: a written rules specification, content list and acceptance scenarios.
  • UX/UI: interaction flows, readable feedback and supported-screen layouts.
  • Art and animation: original assets limited to the agreed slice; no reuse of the reference game’s intellectual property.
  • Development and backend: only the systems explicitly proposed above.
  • QA: functional, device and interruption checks tied to the risks described below.
  • Store submission: not included in the slice; prepare a separate release checklist if full production is approved.
  • LiveOps: not included; ongoing content and operational ownership require a separate agreement.

Tech stack

Proposed: the lead studio’s approved engine and version-control pipeline. No specific engine is attributed to the reference without evidence.

Delivery and acceptance

Validate the package in the lead studio’s actual build, inspect dependency ownership, test clean-checkout reproducibility and verify rollback. Acceptance includes editable source assets and documentation.

The illustrative schedule is 10–14 weeks after access and pipeline validation; weekly integration reviews and a dedicated handover period. These dates are planning assumptions, not the original project history or a binding quote. A handover would include source files, build instructions, a known-issues register and an acceptance report.

Results: evidence and measurement plan

The public product page supports the existence and described features of the reference. It does not establish a CrocoApps business outcome. Verified downloads, retention, session length, revenue, cost reduction, training completion and client testimonial data were not available in the reviewed evidence. No such results are invented here.

Measure first-pass acceptance, integration defects, review turnaround and time to reproduce the build. These are contract-design examples, not historical delivery metrics.

What we learned

A useful co-development scope is defined by integration boundaries and acceptance evidence as much as by its asset count.

Illustrative appreciation letter

ОБРАЗЕЦ. The letter below is an AI-generated educational mockup from the fictional company Clockwork Path Studio. Its text, emblem, seal and signature are invented. It is not a testimonial from the actual developer, seller or publisher and does not evidence a CrocoApps engagement.

Clear ownership boundaries and regular build reviews kept the proposed work package understandable.
